The Community
Prouts Neck is a scenic oceanfront enclave situated within the Town of Scarborough, Maine that comprises approximately 200 households and one hotel. It is conveniently located with nearby amenities including international air, train and bus transportation, retail, restaurants, medical, and Maine’s largest city, Portland.
Prouts is an area of intense natural beauty that boasts miles of gorgeous white sand beaches, a dramatic and rugged rocky coastline, and access to the largest marsh area in the state of Maine. Perhaps most importantly, Prouts is a special place that brings together people from all over the world to form lifelong bonds while enjoying the best of summer in a spectacular seaside setting where golf, tennis, boating, biking, walking, rowing, bird, seal and porpoise watching, communal sings, picnics, sunset viewing, and friendship fill the days. Private country, beach and yacht clubs serve as the social hubs of this deep-rooted community.
Since the 19th century, Prouts Neck has been an extremely attractive and desirable summer destination. Visitors exiting hot urban areas for more refreshing climes originally occupied several large hotels. Over time private homes became the preferred residency for generations of families. Renowned architects such as John Calvin Stevens of “Shingle Style” fame designed large and small summer “cottages”, many of which remain today.
Among the first to build was America’s most celebrated artist, Winslow Homer. Homer introduced Maine and Prouts to the world through his paintings, such as his masterpiece Weatherbeaten. His Prouts Neck studio, a registered National Historic Landmark, remained in the Homer family until 2004 and is now owned by the Portland Museum of Art. Our agency’s founder, Doris Homer, served as a loving and prudent steward of the studio for decades and was well known for her informative and lively tours.
